On July 8th 2014, the first legal marijuana dispensaries opened in Washington. We’re happy to say that anyone 21 and over may legally purchase and consume marijuana in Washington. If you decide to partake while you’re in town, here’s some general guidelines:
- Marijuana is legal only within Washington. Do not take any home with you via the airport.
- Must be 21+ to purchase.
- Limited to one ounce per purchase.
- The state is slowly doling out store licenses. As such, there is currently only one store in Seattle, Cannabis City, and its location is by design not very convenient.
- Marijuana cannot be consumed in public. However, if you are ticketed, it’s only $27 and the Seattle Police Department has said they’re not going to aggressively ticket people. Still, you’ve been warned.
- One thing to keep in mind is that since marijuana is only legal at the state level, if you go onto federally-owned land, you are subject to federal laws. So if you take your Mary J with you to Mount Rainier National Park, for example, you could be arrested for illegal drug possession.
- Did I mention that you should not take any home with you at the end of your visit? Just double checking.
- It goes without saying that you shouldn’t drive while intoxicated.
That’s it! Have fun and be safe.
